Rapid social and biological inventory of Serranías del Guaviare

Officials and researchers from different institutions studied the geology, flora, fish, amphibians and reptiles, mammals, and human communities to produce a report detailing opportunities, threats, and recommendations. It will be shortly be available to read on this page.

Between October 19 and November 3, the Rapid Biological and Social Inventory in Serranías del Guaviare was carried out, providing important findings for science and for the sustainability of the region.

Between 1999 and 2016, The Field Museum conducted 29 rapid inventories, with 21 of these taking place in South America. These exercises have influenced the declaration of 18 new protected areas covering nearly 10 million hectares, by identifying biological communities and social and cultural assets, assessing whether the region studied is of exceptional value for the region or the world, and providing biological and social recommendations.

The following institutions participated in the inventory: The Field Museum, FCDS, Sinchi, CDA, Governor’s Office of Guaviare, National Parks, Conservation International Colombia, Asocapricho, Asojuntas de San José del Guaviare, Corpoamazonía, Universidad Nacional de Colombia and Universidad Javeriana.

The survey captured the mountain ranges of La Lindosa, El Capricho, Cerritos and Mirolindo. The social team worked in five rural settlement clusters and 22 rural districts; the biological team surveyed four sampling points.

Officials and researchers from these institutions studied the geology, flora, fish, amphibians and reptiles, mammals, and human communities to produce a report detailing the opportunities, threats, and recommendations. It will shortly be available to read on this page.
