USAID’s Amazon Deforestation Control (ADC) program, implemented by Chemonics, is an intervention strategy to bring about changes in deforestation dynamics and make positive impacts on biodiversity conservation.
In the department of Guaviare, the Foundation for Conservation and Sustainable Development (FCDS) will support the implementation of the ADC Work Plan and the production and analysis of information on deforestation in the department. To tackle this problem, FCDS will write reports for decision makers and key stakeholders, and increase access to information for dissemination purposes and to strengthen transparent and responsible communication on the current state of the forests, in order to consolidate a culture of shared responsibility for their care and sustainable use.
The program will provide tools for the reduction of deforestation in the region, based on the production, analysis, and dissemination of first-hand information on the loss of biodiversity through deforestation, along the following lines:
- Identification of the drivers of deforestation in the region.
- Design of smartphone or digital applications for the visualization and management of biodiversity database information.
- Work alongside the Attorney General’s Office to provide information on environmental crimes associated with these drivers of deforestation, and the design of a workshop to be given to judges, prosecutors, experts, and environmental authorities.
- Development of a transparent and responsible communication strategy to inform decision-makers, civil society, and the general public about the issues related to biological diversity loss in Guaviare and the actions that the Colombian Government must take towards their management and control.
