Community Tourism and Sustainable Development in Guaviare

The Community Tourism and Sustainable Development in Guaviare project was developed under the Territories of Opportunity program and executed by the Foundation for Conservation and Sustainable Development (FCDS), with the support of other organizations including: CDA, SENA, Secretariat of Culture and Tourism of Guaviare, Territorial Rehabilitation Agency (ART); Bird Watchers’ Group (GOAG), and different operating agencies. All of these institutions and organizations have been working on the promotion, management, and planning of sustainable tourism as a productive alternative for the pursuit of community development and lawful opportunities in the department of Guaviare.

The aim of the project’s activities was to strengthen production chains in the provision of nature tourism services provided by the community in the department of Guaviare, in three main areas:

  • Tourism Sector: Strengthen the sustainable development of tourism in Guaviare, by strengthening the different actors in the chain, inter-institutional cooperation, and the private sector.
  • Tourism Product: Build technical and operational capacity for the development of Avitourism in Guaviare.
  • Visibility and Promotion: Develop a strategy for the visibility and promotion of tourist attractions and murals.

Outcomes

Strengthening of the community-based tourism production chain in Guaviare:

  1. Working together with the GOAG Board of Directors, the organization’s role in the tourism value chain was defined, and several lines of enterprise were identified that that did not include working as an operating agency or as tour guides. It is expected that the strategic plan for strengthening will develop these outcomes further.
  2. FCDS worked with the Nukak National Nature Reserve to strengthen the way private conservation initiatives for birdwatching tourism are run.
  3. Work formally began on the construction of a route for birdwatching tourism in the municipality of El Retorno, by holding a workshop with 28 members of the rural community in which the project was presented. The route will be mostly facilitated by private conservation initiatives. The workshop was led by FCDS/GOAG, Nukak National Nature Reserve, Secretary of Culture and Tourism of Guaviare, and CDA.
